A STAR rating scheme carried out by the food police is improving hygiene standards.
Only 19 per cent of places serving food in Calderdale achieved the top marks of five and four stars when the Scores on the Doors rating system started in 2006.
Now Calderdale Council says that figure is up to 50 per cent and over 87 per cent are rated above the legal standard of two stars.
Mark Thompson, head of environment and housing services, said: “Scores on the Doors has been a tremendous success in improving food hygiene standards in food premises in Calderdale making it a safer place to eat out.
“The scheme not only informs customers of hygiene standards in catering establishments but also encourages business to clean up their act.”
The environmental health team continue to work closely with businesses at the lower end of the scoring range.
