Former Catholic High head, dies

THE former head of Halifax Catholic High School has died aged 69.

Neil Kelly was head of the school at Holmfield, Halifax – now called St Catherine's Catholic High School – from 1979 until he retired in December 1993.

Mr Kelly was born in Accrington, Lancashire, and educated at St Michael's College, Leeds and Pembroke College, Oxford.

He took over at the school after moving from Finchley Catholic High School, London.

During his 14 years in charge he took part in numerous sponsored walks and cycle rides to raise money for the school Parents' and Teachers' Association.

Mr Kelly, who was married with eight children, lived in Huddersfield.

A reception into St Wilfrid's Church, Ripon, was held last night, with a Requiem Mass today.
