FORMER teacher Anne Collins has been chosen as the Labour candidate for Ovenden in the Calderdale Council elections to be held in May.

She is the wife of Barry Collins, the council’s economy and environment spokesman.

Ovenden is Labour’s safest seat and has been held for the past eight years by Coun Danielle Coombs, of Northowram, who is standing down.

Mrs Collins, who lives at Savile Park, Halifax, has chaired the governors at Dean Field Primary School for the last five years and used to work for the council as a senior education officer.

She said: “It is more important than ever that councillors are a strong voice for their communities, doing all we can to counter the impact of the economic recession and excessive cuts in public spending.”
