Fun for all the family on National Libraries Day

Tomorrow is National Libraries Day and libraries in Calderdale are giving families the chance to celebrate by holding a range of free activities across the borough.

From quizzes and crafts to exhibitions and piano performances, there’s something for everyone. Todmorden Library will be celebrating 120 years at the heart of town life with displays about its history and competitions, and Brighouse Library plays host to Rod Dimbleby’s Yorkshire Dialect Treasure Trove. Tickets are available from Brighouse Library

Councillor Steve Sweeney, Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for communities, said: “Libraries are about much more than borrowing books – they open up a world of important and exciting services and activities, including story-time for children, digital skills courses for adults and access to a massive range of DVDs and music.

“On National Libraries Day we want people to head to their local library, have fun at the events, see all that’s great about libraries and sign up as members if they haven’t already.”

The annual National Libraries Day is now in its fifth year. The aim is to celebrate libraries across the country and highlight the free services available, and the joy that a library membership can bring. It shines a light on a service that attracts more visits a year than Premier League football matches, museums and theatres combined.

“Libraries change lives, communities and society. They help improve health, give people the chance to learn new skills, support employment and provide a place for people to meet.”
