Gala night to thank Walking with the Wounded South Pole heroes

Courageous servicemen who completed a gruelling expedition to the South Pole will be honoured at a gala dinner in Calderdale in April.

The Walking with the Wounded charity is hosting the dinner at Bertie’s, Elland.

Three teams of wounded soldiers from the UK, US and Commonwealth - led by patron Prince Harry - raised a huge amount of support for the charity and completed the challenge last December.

The charity’s regional co-ordinator Piers Mettrick, of Halifax, said he wanted to recognise the feat and his idea for the dinner was taken onboard by the charity.

“It should be an awesome night and a great fundraiser for the charity,” he said.

Tickets are now on sale for the bash which includes a three-course meal, raffle, auction and entertainment.

X Factor singers including Lorna Simpson will entertain along with Girls Aloud and Michael Buble tribute acts.

There will also be a magician and among those attending will be soldiers who have fought back from adversity.

They include Ibrar Ali, of the Yorkshire Regiment who took part in the South Pole challenge and suffered horrific injuries from a roadside bomb.

Tickets cost £35 and are available online via eventbrite and anyone able to offer auction prizes, which include a five-star stay at the Prestonfield Hotel, Edinburgh, can make contact at [email protected]
