The Olympics and Paralympics may be over but there were still gold medals being handed out at Beech Road Recreation Ground in Sowerby Bridge.
The Dec-the-Rec committee organised a community sports day featuring a host of different games and activities for people of all ages to enjoy. The committe was formed in 2008 by a group of people hoping to improve the state of the recreation ground. Chairman of the committee Phil Townend said: “Looking at The Rec now, we think that, with the support of the council and Groundwork UK, wer have achieved a lot in these new years - new pathways, new fencing, wonderful new entrances, new play areas for the young and very young, new exercise stations, new seats, new bins and new notice boards.” And he says there is still work to do. They are currently in the process of obtaining funds for a skate area, lights alng the main pathway and two more exercise stations. But the group need more members, in particular someone to replace the secretary who is stepping down.
