A campaign to encourage shoppers to love their local market begins on Saturday - National Market Day.

Halifax Borough Market will be offering shoppers spending a fiver in any single transaction a free ‘Love your local market’ jute bag!

Colin Gledhill, president of the Halifax Borough Market Traders Association, said: “Calderdale markets offer real quality local produce at discount prices. The Borough Market’s buzzing at the moment – it’s a great atmosphere.

“There’s an enormous range of choice . . . and products that you just can’t get in your local supermarket or mainstream high street shops.

“Markets sell things that you just can’t buy in supermarkets . . . everything, from a single zip to half a cow – and the butcher will even tell you how to cook it!”

During the promotional fortnight, Calderdale Markets are also offering a helping hand to fledgling businesses.

Would-be traders can rent empty open air market stalls for just five pounds per day.

“The stalls will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so people need to hurry if they would like to rent one,” says markets manager John Walker.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for people who want to try out their business idea and we’re delighted to offer them the chance.”
