Group of friends crocheted 3,700 poppies for Remembrance Day

After being inspired by the ceramic poppies in London two years ago, Gill Murphy, from Sowerby Bridge, thought that the Calder Valley could do something to commemorate November 11.

Gill said: “I originally thought I would be doing about 500 poppies but it just seemed to escalate.

“I quickly had to get some help otherwise this display would not have been possible.”

Gill enlisted the help of her family and friends to create the poppy field and everyone played their part by making either the red poppy petails or the black pom pom centres.

The group reached around 1000 poppies before it started to become expensive.

Gill contacted local woolen mills asking for donations and was helped out by Stylecraft, T B Ramsden, James C Brett and King Cole.

The banner in the centre of the poppies was donated by Elland graphic design company, Design It.

Gill said: “Although this was very time consuming, and hard work, we enjoyed every second.

“I think it is the least we can do when you consider what our ancestors did for us. I found it deeply humbling.”

The crocheters are raising money through a Justgiving page which has so far raised over £200 for the The Royal British Region.

The group are hoping to donate the field to Bankfield Museum in Boothtown once Remembrance Sunday is over.
