Hair raising idea in memory of relative

An eight-year-old who has grown her hair for more than a year has had it cut off in aid of Overgate Hospice who cared for her mum’s aunt.

Maddison McDonald, from Rastrick, decided to raise money for the hospice that took care of Valerie Copley while being treated for cancer. She passed away in 2013.

Maddison’s mum Karen said: “She decided to grow her hair a year and a half ago and since then we have been fundraising for the hospice.

“At my 40th birthday party we decided to do a bit of a bucket collection where we raised about £300.”

Along with her dad Leslie, who has been collecting donations from his work, Maddison has raised around £600.

At Taylor and Taylors in Park Street, Brighouse, the Longroyde Junior School pupil had her black locks snipped for free by Daniel Taylor.

As well as raising funds for the Elland hospice, Maddison has also been supporting the Little Princess Trust which provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment.

“I am very proud of what Maddison has done,” added Karen.
