A young woman from Halifax has spoken of her relief at finally being able to welcome her soldier fiance home from Afghanistan.
Zoe White’s beau Private Michael Milner has been in the treacherous country for the last six months, serving with 3rd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment.
He started his tour just a few weeks after five soldiers from his battalion were killed in an expolision there in March.
“It’s a massive relief to have him home,” said 20-year-old Zoe, from Illingworth.
“These last few months have been awful.
“I’ve had everything going through my head.
“He’s really pleased to be back too.”
Private Milner, 21, returned to Britain last Thursday and came back to Halifax before travelling to the regiment’s base at Warminster in Wiltshire this week.
Zoe is hoping he will be home for weekend visits before two weeks off in November.
The couple have been together for five years, meeting while living on the same street.
They got engaged two years ago but have been unable to plan their wedding because of Private Milner’s unpredictable schedule.
Now he is back, they are trying to save up so they can finally have their big day.
Private Milner, a former Calder High School student, had wanted to be a soldier for several years.
He enlisted in November 2010, joining the 3rd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment.
He was among the last of the regiment’s soldiers to return from the latest deployment to Afghanistan.
The regiment is planning to hold a parade in Halifax on Tuesday, December 4.
