Halifax’s MP calls for Samaritans CEO to rethink Halifax branch closure proposal
Halifax’s MP Kate Dearden has called on the Samaritans CEO to rethink proposals to close Halifax’s branch.
In a letter to CEO Julie Bentley, Kate Dearden MP said she had “serious concerns” about the decision to close the Halifax branch, and said she worries it could have “serious implications” for service users and volunteers.
The charity announced earlier in October that the Halifax branch would close in April as part of plans to ensure its service “remains sustainable in the long term.”
The Halifax branch — which has around 51 volunteers who operate its phoneline — has been based in the area since 1953.

The charity has revealed plans to create a new super-branch in Bradford, but Mrs Dearden urged the charity to instead consider basing it in Halifax.
Mrs Dearden said: “Given that Calderdale continues to experience suicide rates significantly above the national average, I would respectfully ask whether serious consideration could be given to basing this new branch in Halifax.
"This would recognise both the longstanding contribution of local volunteers and the particular needs of the community.”
She added: “I would also appreciate reassurance that the future arrangements will maintain an appropriate level of service across Halifax and Calderdale, while making every effort to retain the valuable skills and experience of existing volunteers.
"I know there is concern among those who give their time to Samaritans about their future and the impact this decision could have on both the charity and the people who rely on its support.”
