Happy Valley writer to be honoured by Huddersfield University

The writer of one of TV's most-watched dramas based in Calderdale is being honoured by a university.

Sally Wainwright, who has written and produced BBC series Happy Valley, will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Huddersfield.

The BAFTA Award-winners latest works also include successful TV dramas Last Tango in Halifax and Scott & Bailey.

She will receive the honorary university award for services to television drama and the TV industry in Yorkshire at the centre’s July award ceremonies.

Sally started her writing career on the Radio 4 series The Archers and ITV’s Coronation Street.

She created and wrote her first original series At Home with the Braithwaites in 2000, which ran for four series.

In 2009, her three-part drama Unforgiven took to the screen, starring Suranne Jones, before she co-created female-led detective series Scott & Bailey in 2011.

Last Tango in Halifax, which started in 2012, was written and executive produced by Sally.

She won two BAFTA awards for the series in 2013 - Best Writer and Best Drama Series.

The following year she Happy Valley, which went on to bag her BAFTA’s Best Writer again as well as Best Drama Series in 2015.
