BIRSTWITH

Birstwith WI: we had hoped for some samples when Andy Swinscoe came to talk to us about the History of British Cheese and we were not disappointed. He also shared with us his extensive knowledge of how cheese shaped history and history shaped the cheese we have today, from the Romans to Second World War. As well as all these most interesting facts he also brought delicious cheeses for us to buy. Such an enjoyable evening! We would love to have an outing to his Courtyard Dairy in Settle but fear there are now too many of us to fit in his shop at the same time. However I am sure many of us will be making plans to visit in the near future. Continuing the food theme, plans are coming together for our Christmas dinner at The Station who always give us such a good time. Before then there is a quiz evening with others in the Nidd Valley group and of course next month’s meeting when our very own Ann Harriss is going to give us a talk entitled - Get a Hat. Knowing Ann I am sure it will be a great evening. You are most welcome to join us on Thursday, November 13 at 7.30pm in the Church Hall. Debbie Britton.

PANNAL

PUBLIC EXHIBITION: the Ryecroft Group held an information evening for the public on Tuesday, October 21 concerning their plans for a specialist care home on part of the former Dunlopillo site. This much-needed care facility will be constructed as part of the first phase of development at the site. There would appear to be some clarification needed regarding timing for the construction of the access from the A61 Leeds Road. As it stands at the moment it looks as if construction traffic for the care home would have to use the existing entrance from Station Road. This junction and the intersection with Pannal Bank is already a virtual no-go area for a couple of hours per day so many villagers wonder why the access road from the A61 cannot be built in advance of work starting on the care home. There may be some misunderstanding about the sequence of events and timing of the works so enquiries are being made.

REMEMBRANCE DAY: a short service will be held in Pannal Memorial Hall (that is the part used as the snooker room, not the main village hall) on Tuesday, November 11. Everyone is welcome at this service which starts at 10.45am.

Food in the form of a fish and chip supper will be available and the bar will be open for drinks. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, please contact Dorothy on 870292 - they’re only £7 each.

PANNAL VILLAGE HALL: to celebrate the completion of the second phase of improvements at the hall, the TOGS will be performing some of their repertoire of music primarily from the 60s 70s and 80s. On previous occasions dancing has been non-stop, except of course for a break for some light refreshments. The bar will however be open non-stop during the function. Doors open at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 22. Tickets can be obtained from committee members or from Crimple Fresh/Post Office and are only £10 each.

STARBECK

Autumn Day: what a lovely morning we all had last week and it was wonderful to see so many children there! They very quickly planted hundreds of daffodil bulbs to extend the spring colour on Belmont field and planted a dozen little oak trees that Barry Wilkinson had grown,-Barry had been a good friend and waterer for Starbeck in Bloom for many years and these were all his baby trees, a little legacy. The Harrogate District Biodiversity group were kept very busy making bug houses with the children and helping them to follow the bug hunt around the library gardens. We were blessed with mild weather too and not too much mud! These events are great for families and we aim to do at least three free days a year so keep following us on Facebook and Twitter. We are already planning next years diary to include winter bird watch, a bake off style coffee morning, a bag pack at Morrisons at Easter, a wild flower planting day in the spring, our August village show to include a teddybears picnic and a giant village litterpick.

Starbeck Methodist church concerts: the afternoon concert is on this Sunday, November 2 at 2.30pm. This is given by Loughborough male Voice choir and is free with donations to church funds and the monthly concert is on Saturday, November 8 at the usual time of 7.30pm with tickets costing £7 or £16 for a family. Barbershops in Harmony features Stray Sound Ladies chorus and Mens Yorkshire Chorus, it should be a good concert!

Starbeck Lights Christmas Fayre: a big apology first I had been given an incorrect date and I have misled you all. The Christmas Fayre to raise money for Starbecks lights is on Saturday, November 15 NOT 22. I am so sorry and to those who contacted me about having a stall I have passed your details on to the new committee. Remembrance Sunday: this service and parade is on Sunday, November 9 at 3pm. For many years this has been organised by Nigel Parry at first with Gordon Beer after the cenotaph was cleaned and refurbished in the late 1980s Nigel continued to plan the service and the parade and it is always a highlight of the Starbeck year. He has now passed on the role to Gordon’s daughter Sarah who I know will do a good job. Over the years the size of the parade and the numbers of standards from the many groups has increased and it is a proud moment to stand there with our MP, councillors, veterans and so many uniformed people from the very young upwards and join in a short service led by representatives from all the churches in Starbeck. The numbers continue to swell and the cup of tea afterwards at the Methodist church is always welcome and a chance for the ‘villagers’ to have a chat.

Starbeck library are the hosts to Healthwatch North Yorkshire: on Tuesday, November 4 from 1pm-4pm all are welcome to call in and tell the group about your views or experiences of the Health service and Social Care services. 63 members of the Knaresborough Men’s Forum enjoyed a talk and slide show given by Peter Walker and his wife entitled Wacks Wicked (Carnivorous plants). Members were also pleased to welcome a visitor our previous chairman Terry Maud who during the summer moved house to Hay-on-Wye. Peter Walker born and bred in Knaresborough was not of a particular horticultural mind until 30 years ago when he worked in the Netherlands at a plant research centre when became attracted to plants and plant propagation. He has since designed many gardens for banks and parks in Azerbaijan, and with his wife he founded Wacks in his own back garden in Knaresborough, he loves unusual plants and not only carnivorous types, theirs must be the smallest garden centre in the UK. He has therefore limited space to grow but even so most of his plants for sale are grown at home other’s are supplied by specialist growers and by their exotic aunt from Trinidad. Mr Walker has shown at many local flower and agricultural shows in including the Great Yorkshire Show and this year at the Harrogate Flower Show where he was awarded a Silver Gilt medal for his display. At the Great Yorkshire Show he was fortunate and privileged to meet Sophie Countess Of Wessex who visited his stand. He explained his love for carnivorous plants and how these plants catch their prey. Insects are lured by the scent of nectar and then they fall into a pool of liquid where they drown and their bodies become nutrients for the plants. Carnivorous plants cannot take nutrients from the soil and this is the only way they survive, but they can grow virtually anywhere on the planet except polar regions. After the meeting 20 members adjourned to the Dower House for the monthly forum lunch.

KNARESBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB

The club is bursting at the seams with creative talent. That was the view of professional and lifestyle photographer Kathryn Widdowson as she announced the winners of the group’s Open Competition, the first contest of the new autumn and winter season. The guest judge had spent the previous two weeks scrutinising some outstanding images. Club members were clearly passionate about their photography and had demonstrated high levels of composition and creative thinking. The Friends of Harrogate and District Museums

Members and guests had a very informative talk given by David Winpenny on the architectural works of Sir Gilbert Scott and especially the restoration of Ripon Cathedral. Scott was very much influenced by Pugin.

The restoration began in 1862 and was one of his least controversial projects replacing much of his predecessor Edward Blore’s unsuitable alterations. He underpinned the two west towers which was near collapse falling away from the rest of the building. He installed new wooden ceilings throughout. The next meeting will be on Sunday, November 30 at 2.30pm when Adam White curator of Lotherton Hall will talk on the Hall’s Victorian Furniture Collection.

HARROGATE AND THE DALES ASSOCIATION OF NATIONAL TRUST MEMBERS

Once again at our annual Harrogate lecture at St Paul’s United Reform Church we were privileged to hear an outstanding lecture from Harrogate historian Mr Malcolm Neesam. His subject was the town in the 20th Century largely through photographs which Malcolm explained were not always of high quality because of wartime censorship or poor reproductions of press pictures. Many of us knew that the unveiling of the cenotaph in 1923 was watched by large crowds but we did not know about the Belvedere Room listing the names of the Harrogate war dead which was covered by whitewash in the 1970s. Controversy seemed to occur every decade whether caused by the rose gardens on the Stray in the 1930s or the West Riding’s road scheme of the 1960s which would have demolished the Pump Room. Harrogate has also had to adapt to the decline of the spa and the growth of the conference trade which led to the £34 bn International Centre opened in 1982. Janet Hutton, our chairman, thanked Malcolm for a most fascinating afternoon. Join us at Bishop Monkton Village Hall at 2.30pm on Saturday, November 8 at the time of remembrance for a talk about Wilfred Owen who of course had Ripon connections. For more information about our group ring 01423 322809.

PROSPER (Harrogate and District Prostate Cancer Support Group)

Prosper’s monthly meeting takes place tonight, Thursday, October 30. Dr Bottomley, Clinical Oncologist at St James’s Hospital, Leeds will give a presentation entitled Brachytherapy... Seeds and Rods. Brachytherapy is a form of radiotherapy in which delivery of radiation is targeted directly to the prostate gland through the implantation of small radioactive pellets. As usual the event takes place at Christchurch Hall, Harrogate. We will be convening at 6.45pm with tea or coffee and a chance to chat, prior to the meeting’s start at 7pm. There is always the chance to chat and socialise after the meeting.

Earlier in October twelve Prosper members thoroughly enjoyed a wet weekend in the Lakes. Organised by Macmillan nurse, Sue Lennon, we walked by the side of Derwent Water on Saturday, taking in the dramatic landscape as shafts of sunshine pierced the rain clouds. A meal and a few drinks were enthusiastically devoured in Borrowdale on Saturday evening. Sunday morning saw us hike up to the Keswick Stone Circle through heavy showers and high winds. The view of the circle, glimpsed through horizontal rain was well worth the effort.

Harrogate Poker League

We are rapidly approaching the end of season XII and with nineteen separate leagues and a global table to compete for there’s plenty of exciting poker to come.

Our Sunday winners this week were Kevin Gibson at the Regency and at the Trades Hall later in the day. At Starbeck WMC Ian Kenyon was victorious whilst Steve Benson won again at the Otley Social Club. On Monday remarkably Kev Gibson won again, this time at Venue 1919, as Joe Robinson took down the Hart and Steve Ingles achieved a similar result at the Claro Beagle.

Milan Vankovics took another step towards the league title with another win at the High Harrogate and Greg McLachlan won at the Harlow Hill Club. Bib Bielby has been in scintillating form of late and his dominating run continued with a win and another hat full of bust-outs at Starbeck WMC.

Dave Horsman took down the Board in Knaresborough on Wednesday and in the process leap-frogged Stu Strike at the head of the table. I have to say that it’s not often we hear the words ‘Leap-Frog’ and ‘Sty Strike’ in the same sentence. Len Wright took advantage of the mass trip to Vegas by winning at the Brunswick and closing the gap a little on runaway leader Nigel Morris and Gary Jackson won at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club.

On Thursday Mark Boyle won an ultra-competitive event at Park Place and Chris Deeley made his mark at the Otley Social Club. Alejandro Garcia Fernandez won the Thursday tournament at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club.

Friday saw Malcolm Thomson sneak out of the poker woodwork and win on another great night at Harlow Club and John Gilmour reaffirmed his league challenge by winning at the Trades Hall. At Starbeck Cons Vickie Cooper ended the week on a high winning the 34 seater there.

Roadshows

The next roadshow is this coming Saturday, November 1 at Harlow Hill Club starting at 6pm. This is as straightforward as it gets with a £10+£1 buy-in for a 50k Stack. No Rebuys, no Add-ons, no frills just poker at its purest, a six hour format using the same structure as the league events but with extended blind levels. In the EPS Sponsored Fantasy Poker League, Paul Underwood wins the team of the week award with his AQ is Pants team who amassed 9645 points, but Andy Baugh still has a slim lead at the top of the table. In the Rascals Global League Bib Bielby maintains his top spot after another profitable week.

Harrogate Writers’ Circle

The group met on Wednesday, October 1 for a manuscript evening. The Circle were so pleased to welcome back Chris Barnes after a short time away. He read Postcard from Dorset. Lesley Taylor then presented her revised entry for the short story competition called Business Meeting. Peter Caunt’s ghost story was called Lord of the Manor. Sheila read her entry for the annual short story competition called But That’s Life. The story was highly commended by the adjudicator. Joe Peter’s entry for the competition was called Old World, New World. Catherine Burwell’s proposed entry for a flash fiction competition was called The Burial. Flash Fiction where competitors are required to write a story of no more than 400 words on a subject that is given to them has proved to be a popular event with the members. Daphne Peters amused us with her humorous poem, about a cat, called The Wrong Name. Sue Hardy Dawson read four of her poems entitled Uncanny; In Praise of Seagulls; Ape and Shark Attack. Sue told us that she had had a poem read on film in Bristol city centre as part of National Poetry Day. The poem, A Question of a Snake, had previously been published by Macmillan in an anthology, called Masala. We had a very interesting evening with lots of feedback and laughter.
