A former leader of Calderdale Council, Pam Warhurst, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Leeds Metropolitan University in recognition of her work as a champion of local community service and environmental causes.

The ex-Labour councillor from Todmorden was one of the founders of the town’s “Incredible Edible” campaign, designed to encourage people to grow fruit and vegetables on every spare plot of land.

The chairman of the university’s Board of Governors, Lord Woolmer, presented the award at a graduation ceremony in front of 600 students, parents and friends.

She told those graduating from built environment courses about the principles behind Incredible Edible and the way in which it has put Todmorden on the map as a leading light in promoting food-based education and regeneration.

Pam Warhurst holds a CBE and is chairwoman of the Forestry Commission.
