Sadly missed: Sukhdev Sharma has died

The chairman of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, Sukhdev Sharma CBE, has died suddenly aged 65.

Chief executive Diane Whittingham said: “Everyone at the trust who knew and worked with Dev will be deeply shocked. He was our chairman for the past four years and brought deep integrity and a gentle touch and humour to the board. He will be hugely missed. All our thoughts at this sad time are with his family.”

Mr Sharma, of Savile Park, Halifax, joined the trust in October 2007. He had previously been chairman of South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust and chairman of the former Calderdale and Kirklees Health Authority, overseeing the merger of the two hospitals into the current health trust.

He was also former chief executive of the Commission for Racial Equality in London and worked for the European Economic and Social Committee since 1998 championing equality, anti-discrimination, migration and human rights.

He was awarded the CBE in 1998 for services to the community.

He leaves a wife and four children.
