The parents of a little girl who was born with a hole in her heart say they were heartbroken when their newborn was rushed to hospital for major heart surgery
New parents Nick and Charlotte Ford, both 26, of Ripponden, said their world shattered when Amelia, just days old, underwent major heart surgery after medics at Calderdale Royal Hospital discovered Amelia’s heart condition.
Hours later Amelia, now four-months-old, was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) where she underwent major surgery on the hole in her heart and coarctation of her aorta.
A frantic Nick and Charlotte spent 36-hours fretting about their little girl’s fate as she fought for her life in intensive care.
Nick and Charlotte say they were devastated when they couldn’t take their little girl home.
Charlotte said: “I couldn’t stop crying. We were heartbroken - you presume you’ll be going home with your baby. We were thrown into something unexpected and very unknown - it was really tough.”
Charlotte and Nick say they are thankful medics found Amelia’s coarctation so she could undergo life-saving treatment.
The couple are now fundraising for the Children’s Heart Surgery charity after being so impressed with the services and facilities provided by the charity that supports the LGI heart unit.
Nick, a consultant at Hourglass Education, Ripponden, says he was touched by his employer’s generosity when managing director Geoff Brown donated £3,000 to Children’s Heart Surgery Fund.
Nick, who plans to run the Great North Run in September, said: “Children’s Heart Surgery Fund provide equipment for the ward this was something I just presumed the NHS would pay for - I’d never even heard of the charity before.
“We want to do what we can to thank this charity that helped save our daughter’s life. The donation from my employer will go a long way to saving other children’s lives.”
Nick says he wishes to thank Hourglass Education for being so supportive during his family’s difficult time.
Proud parents Nick and Charlotte say Amelia is a happy little girl and her condition is being monitored by LGI where she may have to undergo open heart surgery before she is one.
