A GROUP of animal-loving fund-raisers will share the challenge of the Leeds half marathon next month.
Six staff and volunteers at the RSPCA centre on Wade Street, Halifax, will take part in the 13.5 mile course as a relay team - called Ruff Runners.
Clare Griffiths, rehoming co-ordinator at the centre, said: “I did the London Marathon two years ago and do running on my own but we’re trying to fund-raise for the Halifax centre.
“I think there’s a lot of us that wanted to get a bit fitter really.
“We’re doing it as a relay.
“Five will do two miles each then the last person has 3.5 miles. That’s probably going to be me because I run a lot.” All the money raised will go towards the centre on Wade Street, where the dog isolation unit is currently being refurbished and they are currently busy with the arrival of kittens.
Clare said: “We’re always needing funds. It’s mad kitten season at the moment. We’re constantly over run with pregnant and stray cats.
“Hopefully we can get fosterers to look after them until the kittens are seven or eight weeks old but we supply all the bedding, food and medicines.
“When you have six kittens in a litter, the cost all builds up.
“The dog isolation unit at the centre is used for dogs coming in which might not have been vaccinated.
“We have to isolate them from the other dogs who have been vaccinated.
“It’s in an old building so we’re having that refurbished.”
Anyone wanting to sponsor the team, or donate to the centre, can visit www.justgiving.com/ruffrunners.
Or people can pick up sponsor forms from the Wade Street centre.
Clare also thanked Craig Mitchell at Fat Cat Trading in Elland for providing the team with printed T-shirts for the run.
