High flying pupils take at trip to Cambridge University

The scheme, set up and funded by local company, Thomson Reuters, is part of a long-standing partnership with the school.

The pupils travelled by coach to Cambridge with teacher, Alison Porter-Cross, and were welcomed to the university with an admissions talk at the college where they were able to ask questions about the university and the various courses on offer.

They were given a tour of the college grounds, including university halls of residence, and attended lunch in Selwyn’s impressive dining hall along with university students. The day ended with a tour around Cambridge itself.

The trip was the perfect opportunity for the pupils to find out about university life and to consider their options for the future.

Pupil, Annie Denton, said: “The admissions talk was very useful as it explained how to apply and gave useful advice and the tour of the accommodation revealed what it would be like to live as a student at Cambridge. It has spurred me on to get better grades so I can apply.”

Louise Alton-Fletcher, Editor and Calder High Partnership Co-ordinator at Thomson Reuters, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to offer this scheme to the school. It is a great way for pupils to gain real-world experience of university and the confidence to help them to achieve their full potential”.

As part of the Thomson Reuters Route, the pupils will also be attending mock interviews, workshops and will receive mentoring opportunities throughout the year.
