Barrister Ben Crosland, for Ridsdale, said his client had no previous convictions and a pre-sentence report would have to be prepared on the teenager.

“He understands that a guilty plea to an offence of rape carries an inevitable custodial sentence the question is of course the length of that sentence,’ said Mr Crosland.

Judge Burn confirmed that Ridsdale would be sentenced on September 18 and on that occasion the defendant would be brought to court for the hearing.

The judge told Ridsdale via the video link that his guilty plea would entitle him to a reduction in his sentence next month.

Ridsdale was formally remanded in custody again until next month.
