Northern Powergrid says its engineers have been working since Boxing Day to restore power to the 37,000 homes and businesses affected by Storm Eva, which caused devastation across West and North Yorkshire.

Flood water and damage has meant that around 560 customers, 551 in the upper Calder Valley, are still without power.

Northern Powergrid says the vast majority of those 560 are not ready to be connected due to either still being flooded or having not had the necessary internal safety checks.

The electricity distributor is continuing to work with the emergency services and local authorities to get homes and businesses back on supply as soon as they are ready.

A Northern Powergrid spokesperson said “We are continuing to carry out post flood inspections of our assets and completing necessary repair work in the Upper Calder Valley as quickly as possible.

“We’re working with energy suppliers and their meter operators, who are carrying out repairs to their assets where they have been damaged. Our customer support vehicles will remain be in the area providing information to local residents.

“This support is being bolstered by our partners, the British Red Cross, who are also providing support to affected customers.”

Northern Powergrid is warning local people who spot any damaged cables or equipment not to approach the area as equipment may still be live and pose a risk of electrocution.

Customers should immediately contact the company to report the damage on its 24-hour power cut enquiry number - 0800 375 675.
