There’s usually plenty of horsing around for Movember, but an equestrian firm in Sowerby Bridge are saddling up for a hair-raising contest.
Equestrian Clearance, of Watson Mill Lane, are pitting a horse against a human in a moustache competition, and want the public to place their bets on who will win by sponsoring one of the contestants.
Murphy is a cob, a breed of small, stoutly built horses, who grow moustaches.
The 10-year-old equine is up against Ashley Forrester, who works for an engineering company in Hull and is a friend of Rosie Charles, Online Marketing Executive with Equestrian Clearance, who came up with the idea.
She said: “We wanted to put a horsey spin on Movember, as it’s for horses as well as people.
“We’ve had a lot of interest in the idea and we’re hoping to raise £1,000 via each contest.
“We’re hoping to make it an annual event as it puts a fun spin on raising money and it’s a really good cause.”
Movember was started by a group of men in Australia in 1999 with the aim of raising money for men’s health charities by being sponsored to grow their moustaches throughout November.
Ashley said: “I got a call from Rosie who said would I fancy doing something for Movember, but I couldn’t hear them very well.
“Anyway, I agreed and then I found out it was to do with this equestrian website, but I thought ‘why not?’, it’s for a good cause.
“It’s a bit of a novelty, quite unusual, and the horse will probably win. The horse will probably look better too!”
