Hospitality sector in Calderdale could be “decimated” without more Government support, warns Calderdale branch of CAMRA

The announcement that Calderdale has been placed in Tier 2 and that the mixing of people from different households, in indoor areas, is now not allowed is yet another hammer blow for Calderdale’s pubs say CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Halifax and Calderdale.

Previously imposed measures have already led to reduced custom and falling rates of business and pubs have been unable to organise events to boost trade, and CAMRA say many Calderdale pubs are experiencing a reduction in trade by more than 50 per cent, threatening their viability.

Companies supplying pubs have also suffered, they added.

A spokesperson for the local CAMRA branch said: “Pubs and other hospitality venues are being blamed for the increasing number of Covid cases, but statistical research proves that other factors are largely responsible.

“CAMRA nationally, the Campaign for Pubs and various other organisations have repeatedly asked the Government to provide scientific evidence that the hospitality sector is responsible, but no evidence has been provided.

“Government statements remain unsubstantiated and the hospitality sector is being used as a scapegoat to hide other causes which have led to recent Covid spikes.

“Calderdale is one of the best drinking areas in the UK and the range, quality and diversity of our pubs has led to the area becoming a centre for ‘beer tourism’, thus benefitting the local economy.

“Local licensees have adhered to all Government requirements, but are being placed under increasing strain.

“It was predicted that the curfew would cause problems without leading to a reduction in Covid cases but the Government continue to impose this flawed strategy despite its failure.

“During the winter months customers will be reluctant to sit in outdoor areas, income will decline further and some Calderdale pubs, particularly drinks-led pubs, may be forced to close by Christmas creating unemployment, frustration, anguish and heartache.

“The Government need to encourage consumer confidence in pubs so that customers return. A much more comprehensive Government support package is required or the hospitality sector in Calderdale could be decimated.”
