Hundreds complete the Navigation Walk for hospice charities

THE sun shone on walkers taking part in a picturesque charity hike along the Calder and Hebble Navigation.

About 400 people took part in the Navigation Walk on Sunday organised by West Yorkshire Rotary Clubs in aid of four hospices – Overgate, Forget Me Not, Kirkwood and Wakefield.

The walk spanned the navigation from Sowerby Bridge to Horbury in Wakefield, a stretch of 19 miles.

But those taking part could also choose to walk shorter stretches from various start/finish points along the way, including Elland, Brighouse, Mirfield and Dewbsury.

Organisers estimate the walk has raised many thousands of pounds for the four charities.

Richard Goodwin, of Sowerby Bridge Rotary Club, said: “It was a glorious day. The weather was just right for walking – a bit of a breeze and sunshine.

“Everyone had a jolly good day.”

The total raised is currently not known but Mr Goodwin estimated it will be “many thousands of pounds”.

The Ossett and Horbury Phoenix Rotary Club was the main organiser of the walk, with help from Calderdale clubs including Brighouse, Elland, Halifax, Halifax, Calderdale and Sowerby Bridge.

Members of Halifax Soroptomists also took part in the walk.
