Council chiefs are on the hunt for anyone interested in volunteering at Calderdale’s museums.

After a successful bid to the Arts Council, the museum’s service is re-launching its volunteer programme across Bankfield Museum, Calderdale Industrial Museum and Shibden Hall.

Richard McClenaghan, volunteer coordinator, said opportunities are wide and varied and could be at any of the sites across Calderdale.

“We have had volutneers cleaning some of the pottery at the museum - conservation cleaning of pottery well over 100 years old, which have to be handled carefully.

“Volunteers have also been digitising photographs. We have hundreds of photos, and we scan these and keep them on computer systems.

“At Shibden Hall, we have people categorising the library. There is literature there well over 100 years old.

“At Calderdale Industrial Museum, volunteers tidy and clean up exhibits, getting machinery cleaned up.

“If people are interested, they can come to us and apply. We have work going on all through the year.”

Bankfield Museum has an exhibition on at the moment which showcases work volunteers have done for Calderdale’s museums.

Another exhibition offered three volunteers the chance to fill a cabinet with exhibits on a topic of their choosing.

The topics chosen for the cabinets are: fashion of the 1960s, ancient Egypt and high-heeled shoes.

Mr McClenaghan said: “The topics are all very different but ones which they worked on and put together themselves.”

Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for communities, Coun Pauline Nash said: “Volunteering really seems to be in the spotlight at the moment and Calderdale museums have been in the forefront.

“Volunteers are an integral part of the service adn their freely given time, knowledge and skills are inredibly valued.”

The volunteer exhibitions at Bankfield Museum ends March 2.
