It's a '˜yes' to school dream

The last five years has seen fundraising, campaigning and challenges, but there was celebration last Friday when the plans were approved.

Head teacher Martin Moorman said: “It’s incredible how much of a difference one little word “permit” can make.

“It has been a long and often frustrating process, fraught with challenges and hurdles that we have had to overcome.

“We simply could not have got to where we are today without the unwavering support of the local and wider community, who have helped us raise more than £1.2m towards a £3.3m target.

“There’s lots of positivity towards it. The centre will have far reaching benefits, not just for post-16 students, but for the whole of Calderdale.”

It’s hoped the first spade will hit the ground before the end of the year, with an aim to open the new site in autumn 2017.

In the coming months, a contractor will be chosen and a programme of works will be drawn up.

The centre will be a huge help for Ravenscliffe, which is Calderdale’s only special secondary school.

In September, 167 students will walk through the doors of the school for the new school year, in to a building designed to accommodate just 69.
