Jeremy Corbyn has won the Labour party leadership contest after more than 250,000 people voted for him.

Mr Corbyn took 59.5 per cent of the vote - enough to win the contest outright without second preference votes having to be counted.

He got 251,417 votes, way ahead of Andy Burnham on 80,462, Yvette Cooper on 71,928 votes and Liz Kendall, who got 18,857 votes.

Speaking at the conference, Mr Corbyn said: “It’s been quite incredible, the number of people who have come forward to join our party.

“During these amazing three months our party has grown enormously. Because of the hopes of ordinary people for a different Britain.

“A better and more decent Britain. They are fed up with inequality and unnecessary poverty.”
