A GRANDAD will spend this weekend running a marathon - all thanks to a warning from his doctor.
Jan King, 60, who lives in Brighouse, will run the Robin Hood marathon in Nottingham on Sunday.
Watched on by his wife Pauline and family, he will raise money for Macmillan nurses and Overgate Hospice.
Jan, born in Halifax, took up running a few years ago. “It was nothing drastic, but I’d had a desk job all my life and the message from my doctor was to start doing exercise,” he said.
Since then he has entered a number of 10k races and his gruelling training has seen friends and family dig deep to support him.
“It’s something I’ve always fancied doing and decided it was now or never,” he said.
“I think I’ve done enough training but having not done one before, I just don’t know.” Jan admits this will probably be his first, and last marathon, but his efforts have already raised £469 for charity.
