Landlord taps into Le Tour spirit with real ale walk

A Hipperholme landlord inspired by the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire has developed a mini-tour of his own in honour of the event.

Philip Ward, owner of The Travellers Inn, has arranged “Tour de Travellers” with the support of his local punters and bar staff to raise money for Overgate Hospice.

The tour starts on Sunday, June 8, at 11am and will take the cyclists on a four-mile route around Hipperholme, starting and finishing at The Travellers Inn.

“I spoke to my locals about it and everyone is on board and very supportive,” he said.

More than 50 people have signed up so far, helping towards the £1,000 that Mr Ward is hoping to raise for Overgate Hospice.

It is not only cyclists who can talk part - walkers can also complete the route. Entry is £7, including pie and peas.

Alongside the “Tour de Travellers” on Sunday, Mr Ward’s Hipperholme real ale walk around seven local pubs will also be launched.

The Travellers Inn, The Hare and Hounds, The White Horse, The Whitehall Hotel, The Dusty Miller, The Old Pond and The Cock O’the North will all be mapped on the walk.

Mr Ward said: “It started out as a bit of fun really, off the back of the Tour de Travellers. The slogan for the walk will be ‘walk the real ale way’.”
