TWO public buildings could net Calderdale Council more than £200,000 when they go under the auctioneer’s hammer tomorrow .

Brighouse Town Hall and the former Stainland Mechanics Institute each have a guide price of about £100,000.

The town hall in Thornton Square is a listed building and has been little used for years, apart from space for a taxi office and a decorating firm.

“The property is adjacent to Barclays Bank, opposite HSBC and near to Wilkinsons, the Halifax Bank and all the town-centre shops, bars and restaurants,” according to Eddisons auctioneers.

It was built in 1887 to replace an older building, the Civic Hall, which had been used for public meetings and related business since 1868.

The Mechanics Institute at Stainland has been a community centre but it became unusable because it needs £500,000 of repairs.

The institute occupies a prominent site in Satinland Road and was built by public subscription in 1883.

Potential purchasers are warned that special permission will be needed to fell or prune nearby trees which are in the village conservation area.

The auction will be held at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground, beginning at 12.30pm.
