Burnley Road has been shortisted as a “Rising Star” in the Great British High Street Awards with its campaign, Our Planet Tod.

The initiative is looking to improve the area and is mainly based around regeneration, from tidying up the streets with litter picks to encouraging better recycling bins on the streets.

Last week judges visited the town and were greeted by the Community Brass Band and Andrew Kim’s “dodo” puppets.

Starting at Harmsworth, Townley and Co’s Ecolifegizmo toy shop, they walked along Burnley Road from Park End cafe back to the market, with many green and environmental business and community stops en route.

“We’ve entered under the category of ‘Environment and we’re developing the idea of Our Planet Tod’,” said project co-ordinator, Clare Townley.

“This started with Louisa Needham’s litter picks which made us realise how important it is not only to keep Todmorden clean and tidy but also to look after our planet because we only have one, and our Planet is Tod. The judges seemed to be impressed with our three-pronged approach aiming to make the town more sustainable economically, environmentally and emotionally.

“We’re working with Investors in the Environment from the Green Business Network and had an introductory workshop with businesses in conjunction with TodConnect. So we’ve already got 17 businesses signed up to the Green Pledge. Our plan aims for us to double this in the next year.”

Voting continues until October 31 and people can vote by posting on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
