Laura Crane charity gears up for a spectacular September

A national charity inspired by Brighouse-based girl Laura Crane is gearing up for one of its biggest months of the year.

The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust which supports 13-24-year old sufferers of cancer, is calling on people to do something spectacular this September.

From donating your birthday to taking a #SeptemberSelfie, wearing a headscarf to appreciate the life a young cancer patient lives or hosting an event, the charity hopes people will get behind the campaign and do something fun to help raise awareness of the work it does within the month.

The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust is the only UK charity which focuses on funding medical research specifically into cancer affecting teenagers and young adults.

Since forming the campaign just last year, hundreds of people have participated in the month-long campaign with a Halifax-based supporter who went to school with Laura committed to gearing up his efforts in the final summer month.

Dean James Fox said: “Laura’s charity has always been very close to my heart.

“Over the years’ I have tried to support the charity as much as possible but it’s great to have a month focused to dedicate to my friend.

“Last year my friends, family and I held nine events including a Shabam party and head shaving which raised £8,771.46.”

Before it was formed in 1996, there was no fund specifically for medical research into cancer among 13-24-year-olds.

The Huddersfield-based charity supports hundreds of young cancer sufferers across the region in Leeds General Infirmary as well as the city’s St James’ hospital and Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire and Weston Park Hospitals.

Charity trust manager, Pam Thornes said: “We’re a small team of just three, working hard to support young cancer patients throughout the UK.

“We’re grateful for the support we receive from people at all times, but September is a particularly special month for me as it is my birthday month and also the month I was diagnosed with cancer.

“I’m therefore going to celebrate my second survivor day and ask that friends buy me a virtual drink and donate the money to the Trust.”
