Residents couldn’t believe their eyes when this rare sight came steaming through Brighouse.

The Union of South Africa is one of 35 streamlined pacific locomotives built by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway from King Cross to Edinburgh through Yorkshire.

Its classmate Mallard is arguably the most famous locomotive in the world - holding the world speed record of 126mph.

The ‘Union’ was making its way from Crewe to York for the 75th anniversary of Mallard’s record.
