Lucky escape for mother and baby after their Peugeot was “squashed” on M62

A mother and her six-month-old daughter had a lucky escape after her car was “squashed” against an M62 concrete reservation.

A white Mercedes articulated lorry had crashed into the woman’s blue Peugeot 207 just before 12.21pm yesterday (Tuesday) close to junction 30 on the eastbound carriageway.

Watch commander Andy Dickinson, of Hunslet Fire Station, said it was “humbling” to listen to people who saw the accident.

“Witnesses said that the lorry had drifted across into lane three and the car was pretty much squashed up against the concrete reservation.

“Luckily, mother and six-month-old daughter were pretty much uninjured.”

Mr Dickinson was told how a lorry driver who was travelling behind the vehicles involved was passed the baby from inside the wrecked Peugeot by the mother, who is thought to be in her 30s.

Both the side and roof of the car were extensively damaged said Mr Dickinson.

Ambulance and police attended the scene along with the fire crews from Hunslet, Normanton and Cleckheaton. They were there for around 30 to 40 minutes.

Medical checks were carried out but West Yorkshire Police said they believed nobody was seriously injured.

It is thought the lorry was left with just minor damage.

The carriageway was closed between junction 30 (Rothwell) and junction 28 (Tingley) while emergency services carried out their work.

The collision followed an earlier accident during the morning’s rush hour.

There was slow traffic and congestion the M62 westbound after junction 30, A642 (Rothwell) to junction 32, A639 (Pontefract).

The vehicles were moved to the hard shoulder to allow all lanes to be reopened.
