The M62 has now re-opened after a lorry fire caused major delays for motorists yesterday (Wednedsay).

Highways England said the the motorway reopened at around 11pm last night after it had been resurfaced.

But there was congestion on all approaches to the motorway during rush hour and late into the evening as the eastbound carriageway remained closed between junctions 29 and 30.

The road had been shut at around 7am after the lorry, which was thought to be carrying carpet underlay, caught fire between the junctions for Lofthouse and Rothwell.

There were long tailbacks during morning rush hour, but the congestion intensified once more as people left work on Wednesday evening.

An accident on the inner ring road in Leeds at around 6pm exacerbated the problem, with the city centre already busy due to an event at the First Direct Arena and late night shopping.

Drivers were advised to follow the solid black square diversion route along the M1 and A639 or to avoid the area completely.

But they said it needed time to cool before it could reopen to traffic.
