Man airlifted to hospital after two-car smash shuts M62

Emergency services were called to the M62 near Castleford after a two-car smash left a man trapped in his vehicle.

Firefighters helped free the man and he was airlifted to hospital at around 4.15pm today (Wednesday).

The M62 was shut in both directions, between Junction 32 at Castleford and Junction 33 at Ferrbyridge, after the crash but the eastbound stretch has now reopened.

Paramedics from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance were called after the accident at around 3.30pm today.

Highways England said all three lanes are expected to be open in both directions by 6.30pm.

Crews from Castleford, Normanton and Wakefield attended the crash scene.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: “2 vehicles involved in road traffic collision. 1 male casualty was trapped and extricated by Fire Service personnel and transported to hospital by ambulance.

“Appliances from Castleford, Normanton and Wakefield stations attended the incident.”
