Man jailed for ten years after broken bottle attack

Graham Naven, 29, of Whitehall Road, Linthwaite, was found guilty and sentenced at Leeds Crown Court for an offence of wounding with intent.

The offence occurred in the early hours of June 8 inside the Mavericks bar in Huddersfield town centre.

Naven had got in to an argument with the 31-year-old victim about a spilt drink and headbutted him. Both men have then fallen backwards in to the ladies’ toilets where Naven has smashed the glass bottle he was holding and struck the victim to the face.

The victim would not support the investigation so the police and Crown Prosecution Service pursued a victimless prosecution.

Detective Sergeant Ian Thornes, of Kirklees CID, said: “Unfortunately the victim would not provide a statement to the police but, thanks to information from those who witnessed this attack, we were still able to take Naven to court and ensure that he faced the consequences of his actions.

“We welcome the significant custodial sentence given to him and hope this sends a strong message that the police and courts will not tolerate this kind of violent and intimidating behaviour in our town centres.”
