A selfless man will give up his life in Halifax and move to Nepal to help rebuild the country after its devastating earthquake in April.
Doug Crabtree, 28, of Skircoat Green, has bought a one-way flight to Nepal and will work in remote areas of Nepal, assisting those still desperate for help.
He will embark on the journey in October and will work with the Mandala Organisation while there.
Thousands of people were killed and injured in the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal’s capital Kathmandu and its surrounding areas on April 25.
Among the worst-hit districts was Sindhupalchok where more than 2,000 died.
“After seeing the devastation caused by the earthquake in April I just wanted to get out there and help, using my skills to actually make a difference,” the self-employed joiner and builder said.
“So in June I booked a one way flight leaving the 27th October. I currently have no idea how long I will stay there, but I plan on doing as much humanitarian and environmental conservation work as I can for the foreseeable future.”
Doug’s trip is entirely self funded and he plans to complete a sponsored Blackpool to Scarborough coast to coast ride on October 17 to help him on his way.
He added: “One of my favorite hobbies is cycling, I go on at least one 400mile ride a week. One of my long time goals has been to do the Blackpool to Scarborough coast to coast ride, so I thought I could combine this challenge with raising awareness about how the people in Nepal, particularly in the remote Himalayan areas where I will be working, are still desperate for help.
“I have already paid for flights and equipment and I am in the process of selling my assets to fund my stay in Nepal. The money will be a gift to the group when I arrive in Nepal and will be used by their project manager to pay for materials and tools for use in the rebuilding effort.”
Doug has raised £580 so far and has received support from Halifax businesses Tag Tool Hire and Yorkshire Timber Merchants.
