Man ‘stole from dead employer’

A HANDYMAN has appeared in court charged with burgling the home of his former employer after she passed away.

Christopher Bennett is accused of entering a flat in Huddersfield Road, Elland, as a trespasser, before stealing stone flags, of an unknown value, from the cellar.

Calderdale magistrates heard that Bennett had worked at the premises doing odd jobs for the occupant before her death in May. The 58-year-old, of Siddal View, off Siddal Lane in Siddal, Halifax denies the offence, which he is alleged to have committed on July 6.

Magistrates granted Bennett unconditional bail until the next hearing.

He will appear back at Calderdale Magistrates’ Court, Halifax, on September 26, when he is due to stand trial.

Magistrates have ordered that evidence be served by August 26
