Detective Inspector Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees District CID, said: “While there is nothing to suggest any third party involvement in Mr Matthews’ death, we are trying to clarify the circumstances of how he has ended up in the river.

“As part of our ongoing enquiries, we would like to speak to anyone who was in the Savile Road Bridge, Dewsbury Ring Road or Wilton Street areas who may have seen Mr Matthews prior to him entering the river. He was a white man, with receding dark hair and moustache and was wearing a dark jacket with blue shirt underneath and blue jeans.

“Anyone who believes that they saw a man matching Mr Matthews’ description in the area or with any other information which could help our enquiries is asked to call Kirklees District CID on 101.”
