Market on the move thanks to funding boost

At the meeting of Calderdale’s full council, councillors voted unanimously in favour of the recomendation by the Economic and Investment panel to grant the capital funding.

Welcoming the decision to spend up to £160,000 on moving the market into Lees Yard Calder ward Councillor Janet Battye said: “This is the next step for what has been a priority project of Hebden Bridge Partnership for the last eight years and is the result of a lot of time and effort being put in by local people along with Calderdale Council’s market service.

“Hebden Bridge is a market town and this will put the market into the town centre, releasing the Valley Road car park to be used for parking all the time.

“We will have a market on four days a week, instead of two, with the food market on Thursdays, bric-a-brac on Fridays (instead of Wednesday), other markets (perhaps Arts and Crafts, antiques, second-hand books or specialist markets) on Saturdays, and local produce every Sunday. This will add to the attraction of Hebden Bridge as a place to live, work and visit.

“Of course, detailed planning work has still to be done but this is real step forward to revitalising the market, which has just won an award, and can look forward to an even brighter future.”

Plans are being advanced for the relocation of Hebden Bridge Market from its current site at Valley Road. Costs include electrical connections, sanitary facilities and storage facilities for the market stalls and equipment.
