Massive sleepover for Calderdale girls marks 100 years of Brownies

Brownie girls from across Mytholmroyd, Ripponden, Sowerby Bridge, Halifax and Elland took part in a huge sleepover at the Magna Science Adventure Centre to mark 100 years of Brownies.

The Brownies, aged seven to 10, joined more than 400 girls to celebrate The Big Brownie Birthday, which seen girls from all over the country travelling to the event.

The girls took part in a range of exciting activities, including a ‘kitchen sink’ show where they tried hands-on science activities using everyday materials in weird and wacky ways to create an explosive finish.

All the activities were drawn from the Brownie Adventure programme aim to build girls’ confidence and self-esteem and encourages them to become active citizens.

Amelia, from first Pellon Brownies, said: “It was a really exciting weekend with lots for us to do. I really enjoyed the different parts of the museum with my friends and playing in the water park. Thank you to our leaders for taking us, it was so much fun.”

Sarah Rochford, Brownie leader, said: “It was one tiring weekend but a once in a lifetime experience for many of the girls. The time and planning was worth it to see so many happy faces enjoying themselves. Our Brownies favourite part was seeing the kitchen sink.”
