Mum-of-two fined for benefit fraud

A MUM-OF-TWO has been fined £200 after falsely claiming £2,124 in income support, despite working full-time.

Kate Griffiths, 25, of Mill Hill, Brighouse, failed to notify authorities of a change in circumstances once she started working for the Baracuda group.

She admitted two charges of failing to notify the Department for Work and Pensions between August 2010 and January 2011 and failing to notify Calderdale Council between August 2010 and December 2010.

Paul Milner, prosecuting, said the fraud came to light after her income support was paid into the same account as her wages.

Griffiths, who has two children aged five and seven, was left traumatised after a break-up with her partner.

Calderdale Magistrates’ Court was told he had broken into her home, destroying all the furniture and cutting up all of her clothes.

He has since been prosecuted, but there has been no payment of compensation ordered to Griffiths.

She was fined £200, told to pay £100 in costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
