The shocking state of some of Calderdale’s worst food establishments have been revealed in a league of shame survey by Government health inspectors.
A staggering 17 across the district -including restaurants, shops and take-aways - have scored zero out of five stars during hygiene inspections.
The figures released by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) relate to inspections conducted over the past year and show that 164 establishments across the borough received two stars or less.
However 849 establishments scored the full five stars, with 525 scoring four stars and 257 scoring three stars - the satisfactory rating.
Eighty one scored two stars and 66 scoring one star, classed as below satisfactory.
The FSA’s food safety inspections check whether a business is compliant with hygiene laws - establishments requiring urgent improvements are rated zero.
Businesses which have been rated zero since January this year include: BarBQ2Night, 23 Wharf Street, Sowerby Bridge; Curry Chef, 85 Highfield Road, Rastrick; Golden Bamboo, 8 Church Street, Rastrick; New Dixy, 117a Gibbet Street, Halifax; Shelf Balti House, 54 Carr House Road, Shelf; Sizzler Spice, 13 Manor Drive, Halifax; The Malt House Bar & Restaurant, 270 Oldham Road, Ripponden; and Usmania Grill Bar, 67 Parkinson Lane, Halifax.
Calderdale councillor Barry Collins (Lab, Illingworth and Mixenden), the council’s cabinet member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “When people buy food from restaurants, takeaways, mobile caterers and other food businesses, they should be able to have confidence that it’s safe to eat and has been prepared in a hygienic environment.
“We run a hygiene rating scheme in partnership with the Food Standards Agency to urge businesses to put their customers’ safety first.
“The vast majority of Calderdale’s food businesses have good hygiene ratings based on our inspections, with a score between three and five. However, a small number have a zero rating, which means they aren’t complying with food safety and hygiene law. In all of these cases we demand that work is carried out to improve standards and we monitor their progress.
“We want businesses to achieve the top rating and help them to do so by explaining what improvements are needed. We also work hard to help low-rated businesses comply with food hygiene and safety rules, but if our advice and direction aren’t taken and there is a risk to health, our only option is to prosecute.”
