New beginning for abandoned family of cats

Ebony and her kittens were thrown out by their owner

PAWS, Pennine Animal Welfare Society, rescued the cats and are looking to rehome them so they can live a new and happy life.

After giving birth to five kittens Ebony, the mother cat, was thrown out into the garden by her owner who shut the doors and windows so they couldn’t return to the house.

A neighbour took the animals in and made them comfortable in her shed while she tried to get in touch with several animal charities.

PAWS arrived the next day and took them straight over to to Hird and Partners veterinary practice who were waiting on stand by.

On arrival Ebony was malnourished, stressed, covered in her own urine and infested with fleas, creating fur loss on her back end.

The now three kittens were weak and extremely dehydrated and one of them didn’t make it.

Elisha Parr, a volunteer at PAWS, is fostering the cats and gave them round the clock care to make sure they became well enough to move to new homes.

She said: “It was so heartbreaking when I first met Ebony and her kittens at the vets.

“I feel sickened that a human being could be so heartless and cruel to such defenceless animals.

“It’s a peace of mind that PAWS is here to help animals in need and give them a second chance.”

Now three weeks on, Ebony and her babies are healthy and are awaiting new homes.

One of the kittens has been set up with a home and will start its new life when it’s old enough.

Elisha said: “A big thank you to Longfield Equestrian Centre, all of the volunteers at PAWS for their hard work, Hird and Partners veterinary practice for there endless efforts and for everyone who supports PAWS.
