New chapter on Book Day

Young bookworms transformed into their favourite characters for World Book Day.

Dalmations, bunnies and characters from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory were among the popular choices around the schools in Calderdale.

World Book Day is celebrated globally and gives people a chance to get creative and don their favourite book character’s costume.

Sainsbury’s in Halifax teamed up with one of the world’s best-loved monsters The Gruffalo for the exciting day.

The book character paid a visit to the story and read extracts from The Gruffalo the book to 29 children from the Salterhebble J & I School.

Simon Noble, Sainsbury’s store manager, said: “The children from Salterhebble had some brilliant costumes. We loved having The Gruffalo in store. World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate reading and the event was a great success.”

Dan Lomas, headteacher at Northowram Primary School, said: “We all had lots of fun with all our pupils embracing their passion for reading.”

It is designated by UNESCO in more than 100 countries and aims to encourage children to discover new books, authors and illustrators.
