One dead as ambulance and bus collides near York

A driver has died and six people were taken to hospital in a collision between an ambulance, a car and a double-decker bus.

The person driving the private ambulance, who police believe was not a paramedic or a member of ambulance staff, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near York.

The driver of the bus, which was carrying 16 passengers, has been taken to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Five of the passengers were taken to hospital but North Yorkshire Police said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Another person, travelling in a Toyota Yaris with one other, was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The A64 near the Flaxton junction remained close as officer investigated.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident at 8.30pm yesterday or saw either of the vehicles involved before the collision to contact them.

The A64 reopened in both directions at 6am this morning.
