A new £2 million abattoir will be opened in Calderdale this weekend and farmers, butchers and livestock auctioneers are invited to attend.
The project is the brainchild of farmers and wholesale butchers J&E Medcalf, which is this year celebrating its milestone 50th anniversary.
The investment, which is supported by a Defra grant, has created a 7,000 sq ft state-of-the art multi-species abattoir on the Burrwood Trading Estate in Holywell Green.
Established by brothers Jack and Eric Medcalf, the company is now run by the second and third generation of the family, headed up by Gerald Medcalf.
Mr Medcalf said: “Our new building will make things a whole lot easier for us and allow us to dramatically improve efficiencies. We are confident that we are plugging a much-needed gap in our area.”
The open weekend will take place on October 24 and 25.
