A packed audience heard students Jane Tugwell and Margaret Davies praise Hebden Bridge’s Northlight Art Studios at the launch of the new gallery and teaching space.

Speaking of the warm welcome they received and the confidence they had gained, both had joined classes with no previous art training.

Margaret and Jane said taking Northlight courses had been life changing.

Margaret is now studying for a Masters degree in Ceramics while Jane, having developed her painting skills and made so many new friends, has moved to Hebden Bridge.

The opening exhibition showcased work from thirteen of Northlight’s regular tutors, all of whom are practising artists. A display in the new coffee lounge and library area showed the extent of renovation work carried out over the previous nine months to convert the building, at the end of Hangingroyd Lane, from its previous uses as a funeral parlour and second hand furniture shop.

The community studio and gallery is now available for artists and others to hire for exhibitions and events. During July and August a Summer School Programme is planned with classes in ceramics, life drawing, printmaking, creative textiles, stained glass, abstract painting and watercolours.

Northlight Art Education is promising its most ambitious programme to date for September – more courses, more subjects in a range of new formats. Information will be available at the popular end of year show held in the new gallery during Hebden Bridge Open Studios July 3-5.
