Mothers' Union column with Julia Tum: We give thanks for all that MU has accomplished

This has been an amazing year for Mothers’ Union. It has been in existence for 150 years. There are so many different celebrations taking place all over the world to mark this important milestone. We cannot attend every one of them, but I pray that non-members must be aware of something in their area.

Membership is open to men and women, young and old, single or married. Only last week we enrolled a new Member and she is 100 years old! There are instances where MU works in partnership with other charities and organisations. This is due to our reputation as being reliable and having the ability to bring new skills and opportunities to different campaigns and fundraising events,

The movement began in 1876. Mary Sumner, the wife of a rector in Hampshire, formed a group to support mothers from all backgrounds in bringing up their children. After delivering a speech in 1885 in Portsmouth, she inspired many women present to go back to their parishes and set up similar groups.

Over time, the groups that met forged strong links with local people. They worked to support one another and give voice to disadvantaged women while addressing wider societal issues. Driven by Mary Sumner’s passion the groups proved very popular.

From that single spark of an idea, a global movement was born – and MU has grown to four million members across 84 countries. Members continue working to improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities around the world. At the heart of everything we do will remain our unwavering belief that faith and compassion can transform lives.

One of the many initiatives which has taken place is the existence of a Prayer Capsule which has moved around the Province of York and each Diocese has added prayers. It is finally being taken by bicycle from York Minster to St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Many Members are going to St Paul’s in London to be part of this extraordinary journey and to witness its arrival in London.

We give thanks for all that MU has accomplished over the last 150 years, the work and dedication of all of its many volunteers and we pray that this endeavour will have assisted many people in their diverse struggles.

  • Supporting those in hospital – providing emergency essentials and knitting for premature babies. Wool and small items always welcome!
  • Gathering together donations for vulnerable men, women and children in refuges.
  • Prison visiting; cookery classes, mother and baby unit, supporting those who leave the prison; and providing cups of tea for visitors.
  • Fundraising and maintaining two caravans on the east coast for those who can’t afford a break.
  • Sending clothes to orphanages, and wax candles for the soldiers in Ukraine in the trenches.
  • Many other initiatives which inspire and encourage others.

We invite you to be part of it. Whether you’re passionate about justice, prayer, community outreach, or simply want to connect with people who care, then join us and join in.

I read this short reflection the other day…“you cannot see shadows unless there is a light.” I pray that MU will lighten the shadows for the next 150 years.
