Letter: Your chance to chat about town's future

I would like to take the opportunity of inviting anyone with an interest in the future of Halifax town centre to the next meeting of the Halifax Renaissance Town Team, which is to be held in room G06 of Calderdale College on Monday, November 7 starting at 6pm with refreshments served from 5.30pm.

The town team is a forum for people with the well being of Halifax at heart - businesses, retail, professional, culture, heritage, and, of course, residents. Established in 2004 in conjunction with Yorkshire Forward to advance the regeneration of the area of the former Borough of Halifax by enhancing the physical environment and improving the economic and social well-being of all, it has been involved as a pivotal discussion/ideas group in much of what has happened over the past 10 years or so including, for example, the Broad Street Centre, Somerset House, Elsie Whiteley Centre and the Shay Stadium.

On the date mentioned we are due to have updates from senior council officers on the remarkable transformation of the Piece Hall; proposed development and expansion of North Bridge Leisure Centre; retail development plans for the Council’s Northgate House and existing central library site; the expansion and complete refurbishment of Princess Buildings as accommodation for council employees and, through the West Yorkshire Transport Fund, massive improvements on the Southern access to Halifax (ie from Huddersfield) covering Calder and Hebble junction to the Shaw Hill bus garage.

Everybody will be really welcome and will have full opportunity to contribute to our lively audience participation session.

There is ample free parking both next to, and across from, the Percival Whitley building at the college and the security people will be present to ensure the car park barriers are lifted upon arrival.

Philip Hellawell, Secretary, Halifax Renaissance Town Team
